Introducing Hilary

Iā€™m a young Aussie with a passion for solo adventures and exploring the world, I love seeking new experiences, cultural exchange, meeting different people and making memories.

This blog will serve as a recount of my travel experiences and become a platform for support and tips, from me, who’s been-there, done-that. My goals are to tell my story and help and encourage others to get out there, have fun, meet fantastic people and see the world!

My Experience

From the age of 16, I had travelled abroad a few times, visiting Asia with family, friends and a school immersion program, here’s a snippet of the countries I’ve travelled through while backpacking, cruising, and spending time with local guides.

  • Indonesia
  • Singapore
  • India
  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • China
  • Japan

In August 2023 I decided to quit my job as a pastry chef and travel abroad to the UK and Europe, spending a few months in the European summer and tick some items off my bucket list. I was mostly interested in countries with ancient historical sites, including Italy, Greece, Egypt and Turkey and I booked a tour with Contiki, Ultimate European & Egypt seemed to tick all the boxes!

I got on the plane and the rest is history, I spent nearly 3 months away, met my group and spend 45 epic days travelling with my new friends. When my tour had concluded, I continued to travel solo, staying in hostels along the Adriatic coast, I travelled by bus and met some amazing people, seeing Italy, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia. There were plenty of ups and downs, sickness, long layovers, missed planes but also amazing sunsets, beaches, waterfalls and impromptu karaoke nights. My trip ended in the UK, and I spent a few weeks exploring Ireland and Scotland, welcoming the cool and wet weather after many (many) sunburns and heat waves in Rome and Cairo.

I kept a journal of my day-to-day activities abroad and that has formed the basis of this blog. I’m excited to share my trips and adventures with you, and visit more and more countries, now all I need to do is save, again!

How did I get here?

Trying something new

After graduating TAFE, I worked in the Hospitality industry and various kitchens for a few years as a Pastry Chef and kitchen hand. Although I loved the creative side of it, I felt I needed to see some more of the world. I decided to save up and take a trip to Europe, and wherever else the universe would take me. I quit my job and planned for a couple month adventure, taking all my savings and praying I would stick to my budget.

My very first diary entry, written on my phone. When having my own website seemed impossible, and the unknown lay ahead.
